Literary Journal 2019/2. Kányádi

This issue of Literary Journal remembers the great poet of contemporary Hungarian poetry, Sándor Kányádi, who would be ninety years old on May 10, 2019. The publication focuses on the versatility of the oeuvre, with the main aim of outlining the significance of Kányádi according to approaches that have not been used or are rarely considered in the study of his reception. It is also an essential part of the editorial concept that, in addition to the attractiveness of the poetic personality and the experiences of his career, it emphasizes the professional reasons that led the recently deceased poet to become an influential cultural representative of the 20th and 21st century. In the spirit of this, the studies of the issue cover not only the lyrical works but also Kányádi’s dramas, aesthetic views and linguistic approach, as well as point out the experiences of not only Hungarians, but also Central Europeans and even people in general. Typically for the Literary Journal, the series of essays and analyzes is enriched by the testimonies and interviews of fellow poets: literary historian Györgyi Pécsi had an interview with mayor Gábor Tamás Nagy and musician Dániel Gryllus. A special feature of the interviews is the 2005 conversation with the poet, made by the founding editor-in-chief of Literary Journal, János Oláh, which can be read here for the first time in an abridged version.
