The Bibliography Section of the Hungarian Librarians’ Association has been organizing its memorial conference series under the title “Let’s Remember our Notable Predecessors…” for two decades now.

In September 2013, the centenary of the death of renowned bibliographer József Szinnyei Sr. (1830–1913) was jointly commemorated by the Bibliography Section and National Széchényi Library. With the occasion of the symposium and the chamber exhibition, the Periodical Reading Room of the National Library was officially named after Szinnyei whose monumental life-work is expressed by the slogan Gutta cavat lapidem – drops wear away the stone…

The centenary conference was made complete by the present publication that includes the edited version of the lectures by István Gazda, Ferenc Kégli and László Szögi on the achievements of József Szinnyei, the inauguration speech by Attila Borsos, and the first publication of Szinnyei’s exhibited manuscripts and letters arranged by Sándor Perjámosi.

Three more portraits of bibliography professionals are added to the volume: our authors analyze the career and legacy of József Fitz (1888–1964), Béla Dezsényi (1907–1972) and Margit Busa (1914–2009). At the end of our memorial book a study by Gabriella Rózsa Pogányné offers a science history approach of the theoretical basis of bibliography.

National Collection

National Collection is a joint book series of National Széchényi Library and Gondolat Publishing House that started in 2010 with the purpose of continuing the previous series National Széchényi Library Publications (Országos Széchényi Könyvtár Kiadványai) and National Széchényi Library Booklets (Országos Széchényi Könyvtár Füzetei), keeping their values alive. It is a collection of publications on history of culture, press, books, library and library informatics that all relate to the Hungarian national library or its collections. Apart from studies and conference materials, National Collection also publishes special bibliografies and catalogues based upon the Hungarica resources at NSZL, providing help for the further research of Hungarian culture history.
