House of Hungary's Márai Salon represents Hungary's book culture in the European Union

 

The NSZL provided special professional support to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Prime Minister's Office for the creation of the House of Hungary in Brussels, which will serve as one of the venues of the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, which started on 1 July.  

The library collection in the salon named after Sándor Marai pays tribute to the outstanding representatives and achievements of Hungarian literature, language and science.

The collection consists primarily of copies of major works by Hungarian authors translated into the languages of the EU Member States and works by foreign authors from Hungary. The selection is particularly suitable for the promotion and dissemination of Hungarian cultural and scientific heritage abroad.

 

 

The shelves on one side of the Márai Salon are devoted to literature, and the publications on the theme of Hungarian scientific achievements are presented. On the shelves you will find several works of great importance in the fields of book history, history, archaeology, numismatics, archaeology, law, economic history, photography, church history, fine arts, art history, psychology, architecture, gastronomy, history of science, musicology and musical arts, theology, religion, sports and medicine, with authors and figures such as Mihály Csíkszentmihályi, Ernő Rubik, Katalin Karikó and Béla Bartók. 

In the other half of the library, the collection contains works of fiction by Hungarian authors, works by the most translated Hungarian authors, several volumes related to Sándor Márai, publications related to fiction, literary studies and linguistics. 

 

The library room also houses an ornate copy of emblematic importance. The Philostratos Corvina is one of the most outstanding items in the Bibliotheca Corviniana, the Renaissance royal library of King Matthias, and is preserved by the NSZL as a national treasure. An exact copy of this book has been created with the dedicated collaboration of the National Library's digitisation experts and the book artist Gyula Schöck. The body of the book is based on digital images of the original codex, and the binding was made using authentic binding techniques and materials.
