National Széchényi Library is hosting a memorial exhibition dedicated to the oeuvre of sculptor, medal artist and graphic artist Miklós Borsos, who died thirty years ago.
Only a few sculptors are given the opportunity to make their work the starting point of every journey and make their work the center of a country. Milestone “0” by Miklós Borsos happens to be one such unique piece that has been standing on Clark Ádám Square, Budapest since 1975. The artist has several other public sculptures throughout the country, as well as his prints and sculptures in galleries and art collections.
NSZL’s Collection of Posters and Small Prints keeps 250 etchings and 211 ink drawings made by Miklós Borsos. The exhibition will present a selection from these pieces, together with posters, catalogs and albums. Books illustrated by the artist and the ones written on him are kept by the General Collection of the Library, while the scenery photos are kept by the Theater History Collection, and the letters are held in the Manuscript Collection of NSZL. The statuettes displayed at the exhibition have been lent by the Rómer Flóris Art and Historical Museum of Győr and the Kovács Gábor Art Foundation (KOGART). The artistic medals were made available to us by the Hungarian National Gallery.
One of the most important goals of the exhibition with Miklós Borsos’ presented works is to illustrate the variety, sometimes the process, of how an artistic idea manifests itself in many different forms: as a pre-study, or parallel to another work; in the form of a drawing or a sculpture, an etching or a medal; and that how a literary work can serve as a base for not only drawing illustrations but also for standalone graphics.
