404 Not Found – Who will preserve the internet?

On Friday October 13, 2017, National Széchényi Library will host a professional day entitled 404 Not Found – Who will preserve the internet? on the tasks of public collections related to the archiving of online content. The event will be held in the Ceremonial Hall on Floor 6 of NSZL between 10:00 and 13:30. In the first two hours, four keynote lectures will be delivered, followed by an informal discussion with the participants about the topics raised.

Planned lectures:

  • Kees Teszelszky, staff member of the National Library of the Netherlands (KB) responsible for web archiving will present an overview of Dutch and Belgian projects, the former operating since 2007, while the latter starting in 2017.
  • Miklós Peternák, director of C3 Center for Culture & Communication will talk about the importance of the preservation of online content, with special regard to museum and art contexts.
  • György Kampis, professor of Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) will report on a web harvest and news site archiving performed, mainly for science-metric purposes, by PetaByte Nonprofit Research Ltd. in the early 2010s.

  • Theme leader László Drótos and web librarian Márton Németh, staff member of NSZL will present the experiences and results of the first six months of a web archiving pilot project, operating as part of Hungary’s OKR (National Library System) program.
